Union Square is full of life! Check out the latest events and happenings in our neighborhood and get involved!
The Youth Council began this year as a partnership between the president of the neighborhood association, Chris Taylor, and some of the teachers and students at Steuart Hill Elementary School. They got together and decided to begin by hosting an after school mentoring program every Friday from 3-6:00pm. Come out and play some games and mentor elementary school children while spending time with your neighbors. Contact ctaylor@unionsquarebalt.com (taylfour@msn.com) for more information
The Department of Parks and Public Works has granted Union Square Park a grant totaling over $350,000 for park renovations. The work is scheduled to begin soon and includes money to redo the pavilion and fountain, the two centerpieces of the park. The project comes to the neighborhood with the hard work of our dedicated residents who worked hard to raise money for the fountain replacement and who researched the historic requirements for the park.
In the month of March, the Union Square Association, along with private donations from residents, raised over $4,000 for the Southern District Police and Community Relations Council. The association was told by the district major that the money would be used in various ways to help fill some of the budget gaps the police face in these tough economic times.
Union Square’s sanitation committee, along with the board, is working on solving the trash problem in the neighborhood. Discounted and free trash cans have been made available to residents in the effort to comply with all city trash laws and to have a neighborhood free of trash. Residents have the option of having their trashcan stenciled with the Union Square logo, as well as with their name and address.
Recently, trashcans were stenciled and handed out to every house on Lemmon Street as a test area for the sanitation committee. This event was covered by WJZ and was attended by Mayor Sheila Dixon and several of her top city officials.
On the first Wednesday of every month, the association holds its monthly meeting. Meetings start at 7pm and are located at 1401 Hollins Street. Everyone is welcome.
After an art contest, the marketing committee created an original Union Square t-shirt. Union Square t-shirts are still available. Contact Kim Crichlow for more information about purchasing one.
